I keep coming back to a product distinction that feels obvious once you say it out loud:
people do not usually want version control. They want access to intelligence.

That sounds anti-Git. It is not.
I still think version control is one of the best safety practices a technical team can adopt. History, rollback, review, and traceability matter.
But when you are trying to help non-technical or semi-technical people benefit from tools like GitHub Copilot, teaching version control as the first big hurdle is often a category error.
It front-loads the wrong difficulty.
What people actually want
When most people say they want "Copilot," they usually do not mean:
- teach me branching strategy
- teach me commit boundaries
- teach me remotes and pull behavior
- teach me the Git mental model
They mean:
- help me make sense of this work
- give me useful suggestions while I am doing it
- let me ask questions in plain language
- help me move faster without feeling lost
That is an intelligence request, not a version-control request.
The mistake is treating the safety layer as the product.
The wrong dependency
Technical people know Git is useful, so we naturally start explaining commits, diffs, repos, and branches.
For a beginner, that can sound like:
"Before you get the smart assistant you wanted, please first adopt an entire culture of technical workflow."
That is too much friction for the first mile.
The user did not show up asking for better artifact history. They showed up asking for better thinking support.
Intelligence first, structure second
I think the cleaner product model is:
- The intelligence layer
- The safety layer
The intelligence layer helps people write, decide, summarize, and move work forward.
The safety layer captures history, enables rollback, and leaves a trail someone else can understand later.
Both matter.
But they do not need to arrive in the same order.
For many non-technical users, the intelligence should be immediate and the structure should be introduced gradually, in context, or handled by the system until it becomes relevant.
That is not anti-structure.
It is just a better on-ramp.
GitHub Copilot is not the whole pattern
GitHub Copilot works well partly because it lives close to files, repos, pull requests, and review flows.
That makes sense for software teams.
It is much shakier as a general model for everyone else.
An analyst, operations team, or internal process owner may want copilot-style help with drafting, decisions, workflow memory, or automation scaffolding without wanting their first lesson to be merge anxiety.
The better abstraction is not "learn Git so you can use an assistant."
It is:
do your work in a place where the assistant is useful and the system keeps it safe.
Git may still be the right thing underneath.
It often is.
But the promise should be safe progress, not repository literacy.
The takeaway
Access to copilot intelligence and GitHub workflow onboarding should not be treated as the same request.
Version control is still worth having.
It may even be essential underneath.
But if what people actually want is intelligence, the job is to let them feel that value first, then introduce the structure that makes it durable.
